Story of Change: ​NHS GM Bowel Cancer Screening Programme

This Greater Manchester case study highlights how targeted support is improving access to bowel cancer screening and tackling health inequalities for people with a learning disability. In response to findings from the LeDeR programme showing poorer outcomes and earlier deaths, NHS GM partners developed and expanded a practical approach to identify individuals earlier and provide tailored, accessible support. The results are compelling, with screening uptake exceeding that of the general population, increased first-time participation, and real-life impact stories like Stephen’s demonstrating the value of clear information and personalised support. This collaborative model is now being extended to reach other under-served groups, helping to ensure equitable access to life‑saving screening across Greater Manchester.
