Story of Change: Headstart

Story of Change: Headstart

Headstart is an innovative early intervention programme supporting children and young people across Greater Manchester as they transition from primary to secondary school. Delivered through trusted Football Club Community Charities, the programme provides tailored one-to-one mentoring, group activities and wellbeing support to Year 6 pupils who may be at greater risk of poor mental health and emotional wellbeing. By building resilience, confidence and coping skills before, during and after the move to secondary school, Headstart helps young people feel better prepared for this significant life change. Working in partnership with schools, families, NHS Greater Manchester and local community organisations, the programme has demonstrated positive improvements in wellbeing, reduced anxiety and strong long-term social and economic benefits, highlighting the power of community-based, prevention-led approaches to supporting young people’s mental health.
