Public Health Career Development - Wider Workforce

Public Health Career Development for the Wider Workforce

The field of public health offers a rewarding opportunity to make a significant impact on the health and well-being of communities and populations. There is a variety of public health career development opportunities and qualifications available.

Faculty of Public Health: The Public Health Practitioners Accredited programme (PHPAP)

The Public Health Practitioners Accredited programme (PHPAP) provides an excellent opportunity to develop professional competence and expertise for public health practitioners and wider public health workforce. The learning sessions support attendees in the acquisition and application of knowledge and understanding required by the UK Public Health Practitioner (UKPHR) standards and have been mapped to the UKPHR practitioners’ standards (2018 edition).

The Faculty also offers accreditation via submission of a summative written assessment as an optional aspect of the programme. This is for practitioners who would like to gain an accredited certification at the required level for UKPHR Practitioner Registration. For practitioners working towards UKPHR registration, this contributes to portfolio requirements for the demonstration of underpinning knowledge of the public health standards.

Population Health Fellowship

The national Population Health Fellowship for NHS healthcare staff in England aims to develop and grow a workforce of professionals who will incorporate population health into their everyday jobs.  The learning programme element of the fellowship, delivered by the School of Public Health in Yorkshire and Humber, has been accredited by the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH).

To note: The application process for cohort 4 is now closed. We are working on the aspiration of the NHS England » NHS Long Term Workforce Plan to have a fellow working in every ICS to support the development of local population health expertise.  This will include further development of this learning programme into a qualification-based offer requiring for a pause in delivery until September 2025 to establish a provider for the work.

Greater Manchester Fairer Health for All Fellowship Programme

The Fairer Health for All Fellowship Programme is designed as a comprehensive, in-depth learning and development opportunity for people new to/with limited experience in public health. We welcome fellows from a wide range of backgrounds, including clinical, non-clinical, managerial  and support staff from all health and care sectors (including VCFSE). The fellowship is centred around a core project identified by the fellow and the employer/host VCFSE organisation and refined through support with a mentor and a community of practice. Fellows are released from their substantive post for one day a week for 12 months and experience a mixture of blended and experiential learning, covering a wide range of population health, equality and inclusion and sustainability themes.

T Levels

T Levels are a 2-year qualification for students aged 16 to 19 in England that can be done after GCSEs as an alternative to A levels, other post-16 courses or an apprenticeship. They have been designed with leading businesses and employers to give students the knowledge and skills they need.

The Government has developed T Levels to deliver world-class technical education and provide a new choice after GCSEs.
