Public Health Career Development - Core Workforce

Public Health Career Development for the Core Workforce

As a Public Health practitioner, there are a range of formal and informal educational pathways you can take to progress your career in public health. Some routes may have eligibility criteria.

UK Public Health Register

UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) is an independent, dedicated regulator for public health professionals in the United Kingdom, providing professional regulation to public health specialists, specialty registrars and practitioners from a variety of backgrounds, all of whom have a common core of knowledge, and skills. (UKPHR Practitioner video)

Individuals that wish to apply for Public Health Practitioner registration must do so through their local scheme and undergo a rigorous and quality assured process of

assessment and verification by trained public health professionals. Applicants must already be working as a public health professional with autonomy in their own area of public health practice (for a minimum of 2 years).

School of Public Health | Health Education North West (nwpgmd.nhs.uk)

The School of Public Health train and educate public health experts and leaders to serve the people of the North West and beyond. Training in Public Health is multidisciplinary: about half of our Specialty Registrars are from a medical background, and half from other professions.

North West School of Public Health training placements are grouped into three geographies – Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Merseyside, and Cumbria and Lancashire. An individual Specialty Registrar will normally be based in one of these geographies throughout their training. However, they might take advantage of special training opportunities in other geographies within the North West or elsewhere in the UK, especially later in training

Faculty of Public Health: The Public Health Practitioners Accredited programme (PHPAP)

The Public Health Practitioners Accredited programme (PHPAP) provides an excellent opportunity to develop professional competence and expertise for public health practitioners and wider public health workforce. The learning sessions support attendees in the acquisition and application of knowledge and understanding required by the UK Public Health Practitioner (UKPHR) standards and have been mapped to the UKPHR practitioners’ standards (2018 edition).

The Faculty also offers accreditation via submission of a summative written assessment as an optional aspect of the programme. This is for practitioners who would like to gain an accredited certification at the required level for UKPHR Practitioner Registration. For practitioners working towards UKPHR registration, this contributes to portfolio requirements for the demonstration of underpinning knowledge of the public health standards.

Faculty of Public Health: Specialty Training

This provides guidance on specialty training for registrars, supervisors and those considering entering the specialty. The curriculum describes all the required components of training leading to completion of training in public health which normally for five years or more. The curriculum provides a framework within which registrars and supervisors can determine and understand the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours which will allow a registrar to achieve the level of competence required of a specialist to undertake consultant level practice. It has been future-proofed by adhering to enduring principles of the practice of public health rather than the detail of the current systems within which health and social care is currently delivered in the four administrations with the UK. The curriculum as developed should therefore be relevant through structural reorganisation and in different systems, cultures, and countries.

The curriculum defines and describes the processes of training including recruitment, induction, assessment and remediation, phases of training, settings, learning methods and outcomes. Learning outcomes are the statements that describe core elements of learning that a registrar will be required to obtain whilst in training. The curriculum describes at what stage of training these learning outcomes should be gained.
